Chapter Nine

Seven o’clock. Bobby would be arriving any minute to pick her up. Laura didn’t really feel like going to a movie but she had promised. There was a lot of local news to catch up on, and Bobby had always been gabby. It would be just like old times. She’d have fun.

She wished it was Michael who was picking her up. She still couldn’t believe that he had taken her out for lunch. It was hardly a date. She shouldn’t get so excited about it. But they had talked and he said he liked her—well, he said he didn’t dislike her, he said, quite the contrary.

Laura danced around the room, took her bottle of cologne, held it at arm’s length, and waved it around as she pressed the button and sent a cloud of spray in her general direction.

No, she was silly to dream.

The dog’s barking announced Bobby’s arrival.

She quickly ran the brush through her hair and dabbed on a little lipstick.

There was a knock on her bedroom door, and then came her father’s voice. “Laura, Bobby’s here.”

“I’ll be right out.” She took one last look in the full-length mirror—beige pants and a white knit top. She looked fine, but was her outfit too casual? She added a pair of big hoop earrings and a long gold chain. That should do it. After all, they were just going to see a movie, and no one dressed up for the movies any more.

She found Bobby in the living room, sitting in one of the armchairs and talking with her parents. Laura’s mother was resting on the couch, propped up with pillows. Over her legs was a colorful afghan she had crocheted, and in her hands were the beginnings of another one. From the smile on her face, Bobby must have said something that had pleased her.

When Laura entered, Bobby immediately got up out of the chair and came to greet her. “Hi, Laura. Ready to go?”

Sweet Bobby! He had doused himself with spice-scented after-shave lotion, and his hair was slicked back and still damp. The white stripe on his forehead acknowledged the cap he always wore when he was out in the fields. In contrast, his complexion was ruddy from yet another sunburn and a thorough scrubbing with a powerful soap and a rough towel.

“I sure am,” she replied.

“The second show’s not till nine-thirty,” Bobby said. “If we hurry, we’ve got time for Chinese food.”

Laura hesitated. “Oh, Bobby, I’m not very hungry and I’m not dressed to go out for dinner.”

He looked crestfallen. “I guess I should have said something sooner, eh?”

“Go on, Laura,” her mother encouraged her. “You don’t have to be hungry for Chinese food.”

“And you’re dressed up good enough. You look great to me,” Bobby added.

Laura gave him a smile. What the heck, there was no reason to disappoint him. “Well then, let’s go. By the time we get there I’ll probably be hungry again. I’ll just grab a sweater and my purse and I’ll be ready to go.
